"Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation."—II Peter 1:20
This verse doesn't mean that one cannot sit down in private and read and study the Bible. It simply means that one passage of Scripture is not to be isolated and interpreted without considering all that the Bible has to say on the same subject.
A good rule to follow is: never use an obscure passage to contradict several clear passages.
